"Better and faster" I find it better than both Windows media player and Real Player for playing movie and sound files because it's smaller and starts faster. No ads. Not very flashy GUI or startup screen. Best choice as a no nonsense media file player.

"I downloaded this file and zonealarm found it malicious" I deleted the file because it is corrupt. I don't like downloading corrupt files.

"Corrupt files like the other" It downloads OK When you begin to run Setup in Win 7 64bit it reports the files are corrupt... moving on Checked with AVG for virus, AVG reports files is not infected. Setup reports it is just corrupt.

"Very good, no problems" Easy to use and no padding. The original RealPlayer is a nuisance and not user friendly. None. It avoids the pain of the original Really good for listening to BBC Radio

"Of course it works.." People are complaining about it not working in Windows 7. Why don't you read the info about it before downloading. It is suitable up to Vista. No mention of 7.. It is simple small and efficient, but not very sophisticated if you are after a full utility.. Get it if you don't want a full utility, otherwise install the free version of Real Player, or even buy the full version

CyberDoc999, if i need RealTime (rarely i do), i can use MediaPlayerClassic with this codec. No need to download heavy and bloated RealPlayer. Get it?

The product is easy to install or uninstall (I'm running Windows ME), compared to the nightmare of trying to install RealPlayer 8 (which tries to hijack so many settings in your computer). The one significant drawback to this product is that although it plays .RA [ealAudio]and .RM [RealMedia] and .RV [RealVideo] files on your local disk well, it can't handle streaming files (.RAM or .SMIL metafiles) at all. 1. The product is easy to install (I'm running Windows ME), compared to the nightmare of trying to install RealPlayer 8 (which tries to hijack so many settings in your computer). 2. The product is also easy to uninstall - again, unlike RealPlayer 8. 3. The product is a much simpler solution to playing Real Media files (audio or video) than RealPlayer 8 or later. (In actual fact, I never upgraded beyond Real Player 8). The one significant drawback to this product is that although it plays .RA [ealAudio]and .RM [RealMedia] and .RV [RealVideo] files on your local disk well, it can't handle streaming files (.RAM or .SMIL metafiles) at all. Unlike RealPlayer 8, you can't play a file that's on the internet somewhere (e.g. on a RTSP - or even a HTTP - server). If you only need to play files that are on your local hard disk, this product is an excellent substitute for RealPlayer. But if you need to listen to streaming .RA or .RM or .RV files (e.g. internet radio), that you can't copy to your hard disk (e.g. because it isn't on an HTTP link, so can't be downloaded), this product won't help you. Updated on Mar 10, 2010 Afraid I didn't read the page header properly! Apologies... The version of RealAlternative that I was testing was v1.5.1, which is the last version that runs on Windows 9x, and my review refers to that version.

"Setup File is corrupt - won't work" Nothing, because it doesn't work. File is corrupt - won't work (Win XP) Look for a real alternative

I came across this recently, installed it and tested it on a few .rm and .ram video files on my laptop, which at the time was running Vista and had RealPlayer installed (as many here probably know, it is practically impossible to do a clean uninstall of RealPlayer once you have it. It leaves scars on your registry that will never heal unless you were wise enough to set up a system restore before installing). The few files I tested worked fine, both in the supplied opensource player and, astonishingly, in WMP. Full marks so far. Then I had to replace my hard drive on the laptop. It came back with a new installation of Windows 7. I installed Real Alternative on this, tested the same files as before, and found that while some were playable in WMP, others weren't. The error message on attempting to play these files says, unhelpfully, "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file". I wondered if anyone here could point me in the direction of a solution. Should I install an earlier version of WMP? Is there some additional codec that I might need to install? I agree with the general consensus here, it will be a great day when people stop using the Real Media format once and for all, but unfortunately, a few misguided people (such as the BBC) insist on keeping the thing alive.
